2010 Tip for the budget businessman

Every year the South African public is encouraged to give tips to Minister of finance Trevor Manuel for use in the annual South African budget speech. Now for at least the next two years, it best that we focus our energy on giving tips to the small business community. This blog article aims to lead you to convince yourself that you must sift through the knowledge you have about modern business – and replace prescribed procedures with working insight. The simplest way to explain my tip to you, is to use a popular quote by Dietrich Bonhoeffer, but modified to suit this blog article.

To understand the modern business of Africa, is not the same as to remember the knowledge you know about the economics of Africa. To understand the modern business of Africa is to perceive the essential nature of things to do with business. The best informed businessman is not necessarily the wisest businessman.

Indeed there is a danger that precisely in the multiplicity of your knowledge about business you will loose sight of what is essential. But on the other hand, knowledge of an apparently trivial detail quite often makes it possible to see into the depths of things in the business of Africa. And so the businessman will seek to acquire the best possible knowledge about economics and business, but always without becoming dependent upon this knowledge.

To recognize the significant in the factual is to be an effective businessman.
